Testing the EOS 5D Mk II (Part 3).
|
|
Location: Ye Olde Smokehouse, Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands.
I have been shooting exclusively with the new EOS 5D Mk II for the past 3 days. So, how did this full frame dSLR perform during my shoot in Cameron Highlands? Well, no dSLRs are perfect and it is the same with the 5D Mk II. There were a few issues I noticed that were unique to this camera, a few good ones and also some bad ones which could adversely effect the outcome of your shots if you are not careful. Of course while writing this review, I am comparing with my original 5D which has served me excellently for the past two years.
First, I will highlight the good points regarding this camera. I will be talking about the bad points in the next part of my review. With a sensor offering 21.1 megapixels (almost the resoulution of a medium format camera), it is without a doubt that the quality of the images produced by this camera is first class. You need to see the RAW files to be covinced! Details are excellent, while the tonal gradiation of this camera is superb. The colours produced by the DIG!C 4 sensor is also nicely saturated with very little post editing required in Photoshop. As was highlighted in Part 1, the images produced by this sensor is supremely sharp, unlike the DIG!C 2 precessor in the original 5D. Even images produced using the Neutral Picture Style has sharpness and colour gradiation which is noticebly better and more saturated than what was produced in the original 5D.
Therefore, I think that the highlight of this camera is without a doubt the 21.1 megapixels, the sharpness of the sensor and the ability to capture more saturated colours compared to the original 5D.

Testing the Canon EOS 5D Mk II (Part 1)
|
|
It has been almost two weeks since I purchased Canon's latest full-frame dSLR. Due to time constrains, it was only today that I managed to get the camera out of the dry cabinet and perform some basic tests. The venue of these shots was the playground in front of my house and the subjects were my daughter and her two cousins.
After these simple test and also after processing the RAW files in the DPP software and also in Photoshop, these are my initial impression of this camera:
1) BELIEVE in all the reviews that you have read about this camera . . . IT IS THAT GOOD!!!
2) The latest DIG!C 4 processor in this camera produces EXTREMELY sharp images even if you have selected the Neutral Picture Style. Therefore, if you use the Standard Picture Style, you need to reduce the sharpness in the DPP software (of course, all these images were taken with an "L" lens ). The pics were so sharp that I had to introduce the soft-focus filter effect in Photoshop for the first image.
3) The 21.1 megapixels of this camera produces a TIFF file of more than 75 MB in size. This will noticebly slow down your computer processing speed during editing in Photoshop (eventhough I have 2GB of RAM in my laptop).
These were just simple test shots to get the feel of this new camera. I will be extensively testing this new camera next week during my trip to Cameron Highlands. Therefore, a more detailed tests will be uploaded in the coming weeks. Stay tuned !!

THEAN HOU TEMPLE (SERIES 4)
|
|
And so.. another journey ends. After 5 visits to this beautiful temple during the course of two weeks, I think that I have completed my self-assignment to shoot this place. I think that I have managed to get all the shots that I have wanted to shoot at this place. The only angle that I did not shoot was perhaps the temple view from the outside during twillight, and also the hawkers at the temple entrance. That previsualised images will have to wait until next year as after this, the magnificient lanterns will not be lit again until the next Chinese New Year. There was also some statues outside the temple which I think would make a good image.. but that will have to wait for another day perhaps.
As usual, enclosed is the technical specs regarding these shots:
While shooting these images, I had used the "Expose To the Right" technique, where the images were deliberately overexposed using the camera's histogram (while avoiding the blinking highlights). This technique was used to retain as much detail as possible in the shadow areas of the shot without overexposing the highlights. To use this technique, an initial or "correct" exposure was first obtained using the evaluative metering mode. While checking the histogram in the camera, I had deliberately overexposed the shot by 1/2 stop thereby making the histogram "move" towards the right as far as possible, taking care to avoid the blinking highlights. The overexposed image was then underexposed to the correct exposure using the Levels function in Photoshop. This technique will retain as much detail as possible in the shadow areas of the shot.
These images were shot using the EOS 5D in Av Mode. For the first image, the aperture selected was f/13.0 and an aperture of f/16.0 was used for the second image. The shutter speed selected by the camera was at 15 seconds for both these images. To reduce the red cast due to the lanterns, I had selected the Tungsten WB in the DPP software, while the Picture Style was Neutral. As always, the evaluative metering mode was used and the shutter was fired using the mirror lock-up function together with the 2 seconds self timer.
