The Making of CANON'S WIRELESS FLASH SYSTEM + CUSTOM WB.

While shooting yesterday's table-top photography session, I encountered a unique problem relevant to this type of photography:

The major problem was achieving the correct White Balance for these shots. No matter what WB settings I selected, not one of these settings gave me the "correct" WB or the White Balance that I was looking for. I tried using the Daylight, Flash, Tungsten, Flourecent and AWB settings but I still could not achieve a perfectly neutral White Balance. I even tried selecting the White Balance manually in the DPP software but even that did not work. If you notice, all my fruit shots have a yellowish colour cast in them. Normally, I would not have bothered correcting this cast when shooting landscape shots as the yellowish cast will create a "warmer" shot that is ideal for landscape photography. But I do not think that the yellowish cast will be ideal for the shots which i am doing today.

Therefore for today's project, I had to revert to a WB setting in my 5D which I have not tried before - the CUSTOM White Balance setting. A good part of the morning was spent reading the 5D's manual regarding manually selecting theCustom White Balance setting. Thank fully, it was easy enough to understand. I had shot the back of my reflector (which was pure white) and the custom White Balance setting was based on that image. As you can see from the shots, this setting provided the most accurate White Balance setting as far as I am concerned. I wouldn't say that the White Balance is correct, but the Custom WB setting gives by far the most accurate setting considering the lighting of my make-shift "studio".

hanya pendapat sajer bro...jgn marah eh..hehehehee

The Set-Up: CANON'S WIRELESS FLASH SYSTEM.

The Set-Up:

Constructing the background:

The Reflector:

The Lighting System : 1 Master Speedlite & 2 Slaves for the Main-Light and Fill-Light. The additional flash is for show only.. haha

The Props:

The primary objective for me when i started this project was to find out how good the Canon's Wireless Flash System was. I was also interested to know whether I could control two different speedlites (slaves) by using one master speedlite efficiently i.e. the slaves must fire when I wanted them too. The choice of subject and the composition became secondary. At the end of this experiment, I can conclude that this wireless flash system worked perfectly and all speedlites were able to communicate with each other remotely. There was no instances where the slaves did not fire, even when I placed the wireless sensor at an accute angle from the master speedlite. Below is a summary on how I constructed the wireless system:

1. 1 unit of 580 EX II was attached to the camera as the Master Unit. This Master Unit was set not to fire as I only wanted the two Slave Units to fire.

2. 1 unit of 580 EX II (Slave Unit) was used as the main-light at an angle of 45 degrees from the camera pointed towards the subject. This Slave Unit was assigned with "ID: A".

3. 1 unit of 580 EX (Slave Unit) was used as the fill-light positioned slightly towards the right of the camera pointed to the subject. This second Slave Unit was assigned with "ID:B"

4. A ratio of 4:1 was set in the Master Unit to ensure that the main-light was four stops brighter than the fill-light.

5. The wireless sensor of both these Slave Units was positioned facing the wireless sensor of the Master Unit. If this is not done, then the slave units will not be able to communicate with the Master Unit.

6. That's it.. just fire away..

Special thanks goes to Ruwaida aka Cik Balqish for lending me the two tripods that you see in the first pic.

yeah..i can see my tripod posing perfectly there (i wonder whether they can communicate with each other too)
good effort but very high investment..should try with people nxt time..ive seen the Nikon CLS xperiment before and the pics were gorgeous..
